The Metchosin Biodiversity Project’s 131st Talk & Walk took place on Friday June 19 and Saturday June 20. The session was about large carnivores in East Sooke, Matheson Lake, and Roche Cove regional parks. Rob Shoemaker, Conservation Technician with CRD Regional Parks, did the presention. He shared an overview of the CRD’s Large Carnivores Monitoring Project in East Sooke, Matheson Lake, and Roche Cove regional parks. The project uses trail cameras along with track and sign surveys to document the presence and movements of black bears, cougars, and wolves. The presentation introduced how the project works, why certain monitoring methods were used, and what they revealed about the carnivores that live in our local landscapes. Rob also provided an introduction to identifying tracks, scats, and other signs of these three species.
The associated walk took place on Saturday morning. A group of about 25 met Rob at Roche Cove Regional Park for a guided walk. We looked for real examples of wildlife tracks and signs.
